At the Kaimuki Y, we've embarked on a mission to figure out why people work here with us - all with the intention of a happier, healthier workplace. (Visit our jobs page.)
If you've been following us on Facebook or Instagram, you may have seen a few of our staff talk about what they love doing here, in videos like this one:
It's always enlightening to hear what others have to say and so we talked to more of our staff to know their stories. Each one of them will make your heart full with what they have to say about their work. Read more below.
Membership & Healthy Start Room
The reason why I’m at the Y is I was really sick for a long time and when I moved up to Hawaii, the YMCA was the first positive thing I could do to recover my health and I met a lot of people as well when I didn’t know anyone on the island.
Kristen Santhany, Welcome Center
I enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and the positive interactions. I also, love how understanding and accommodating the staff is with the members as well as with one another.
The Y has changed my life by allowing me to have a steady job in an environment that I enjoy. I do not feel threatened in the workplace and also feel confident in what I am doing. I feel as if I am encouraged to go above and beyond what I am "expected" to do and am also valued for what I can do. I feel as if my input is important and respected and that my work is productive and important.
Adam Heuler, Welcome Center & Healthy Start Room
I’m also fairly new to the Y and “why” did I come to the Y…because I wanted to work some place that had a lot of true meaning to it beyond simply just money, beyond simply just work, and to have an authentic, genuine moral value to what I was doing each day. The YMCA seemed to be exactly that type of place from start to finish.
Kathy Loman, Group Exercise Instructor
I’ve been with the Y over 11 years.
I had actually started here because I was working with a physical therapist and somebody at aqua therapy asked me if I would teach group exercise classes which I had never done.
I came here to the Kaimuki Y and started teaching the H20 Fit and now I also teach Aqua Arthritis. The next thing I knew, I had 19 classes and I ended up just loved teaching!
What I love about the Y and about teaching is seeing improvement, which I see as a Director and as an exercise instructor here – from both sides, especially with the seniors. I think I love working with them the most. They come to us with frozen shoulders, injuries, balance problems, different things… you’re able to see the improvement you make in their lives and just to have them tell you that if it wasn’t for being here and working out at the Y, that they might not even be alive, is just so rewarding.
I’ve been here long enough that I can see each member making this progress. Some come up to me and ask what else they can do to improve their lives.
With the younger crowd, their goals are fitness, getting back in shape, losing weight and being able to set goals with them, is so rewarding to me.
What I love about the Y is our community and our diversity. I believe in our mission and our importance in community. I feel we all have the same dream and goal to help our families.
And that's why they work at the Kaimuki Y.
A big mahalo to all our staff, because without them, we wouldn't be able to do the good work that we do.
We're looking forward to hearing more of our staff's enriching stories. Keep updated on our blog by visiting us on Facebook :)
